Silk Painting Made Easy

Silk Painting has never been easier with FabricMate markers. With some simple techniques and a selection of coordinating colors you can create a beautiful addition to any home decor! To get started on this fun and easy project you just need to assemble your materials on a work table and cover the area with newspaper or plain newsprint. The fabric markers work very well on silk and there is no need to set the color after it has dried. Using salt is not necessary but it creates a nice mottled texture.

Supplies

Supplies needed:

  • Fabric Mate chisel tip markers in assorted colors
  • kosher salt or rock salt
  • fine mist spray bottle filled with water
  • shallow tray
  • pre-printed silk pillow, scarf or tie

instructions

Instructions:

Fill shallow tray with a layer of salt about 1 inch thick. Spread evenly along bottom of tray.
If you have a pre-printed gutta silk piece the effects are very stunning such as in the pillow in the illustration. You can also color very free form and abstract and get beautiful results.

Immediately fill in areas with color with the markers, leaving a few areas white.
Spray the area a few times with bottle and place in tray on top of the salt. Pour salt on the project to cover the entire surface and let sit for about 20 minutes. The salt will draw some of the "dye" out of the project creating beautiful textures. When you remove the project from the tray, shake the excess salt from it and let it dry thoroughly. Repeat entire process on other side of project.

When your project is completely dry you may wash it by hand in cool water to get rid of any excess salt crystals. Iron if needed.

Tips

You can create beautiful effects on the silk by dipping a round watercolor brush in clean water and going through the already colored areas while Fabric Mate is still wet. The Niji Waterbrush is great for lifting color out too.
