Simple Stamping on Fabric

Make any plain cotton shirt elegant with this easy technique. Use foam stamps or cut out your own shapes for a blended watercolor effect on cotton fabric. FabricMate markers come in 29 colors so the blending options are endless and there is no need to heat set after drying.

Supplies

  • Yasutomo Fabric-Mate brush tip pens in yellow, brown, orange and alizarin Crimson
  • white cotton t-shirt
  • oak leaf foam stamp
  • spray bottle filled with water

Instructions

Before you begin:
Pre-wash the shirt to remove any sizing and then iron. Place a piece of cardboard or wax paper inside the shirt to prevent bleed through on the other side of the shirt while stamping.

Color foam stamp with Fabric-Mate pens starting with yellow. Color parts of the stamp and proceed to orange and fill in more parts of stamp. Finish with brown and Alizarin Crimson around leaf edges. Think of how fall leaves look when you are coloring the stamp.

Spray the colored stamp evenly with water until wet but not dripping. If you get too much water on the sides of the stamp, dab off with a paper towel. Spray about six inches away from the stamp for even coverage.

Turn the stamp upside down and press firmly onto the t-shirt. One coloring will give you two prints. The first one will be more intense than the second and will give you a nice dimensional effect on the fabric.

Lift your stamp carefully and you will see how beautiful the results are with very little effort! Randomly stamp the leaf onto the shirt following the above steps starting at the neck area and work your way down the shirt. Let the shirt dry thoroughly and iron to set color.

Tips

Try these different color combinations
    •    Spring leaves; Yellow, Apple Green, Viridian
Pastel Leaves; Pastel Dusty Rose, Pastel Aqua, Flourescent Sky Blue
    •    Brilliant Leaves; Flourescent Violet, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, Cobalt Blue

After drying for 24 hours, there is no need to heat set your design.

For an artistic effect, try outlining the leaves with a fine line Permawriter pen.
