Kirigami Japanese Maple Leaf

This beautiful leaf was demonstrated by origami master Mr. Kobayashi of Origami Kaikan in Tokyo Japan. A few easy folding steps and a good pair of scissors is all you need to get started on this project. This simple fold and cut leaf is great when made in different fall colors. Use origami paper, gift wrap, or different colors of rice papers and make the leaves in several sizes for a wonderful decoration.

Hari-e Collage

A traditional Japanese craft of tearing, coloring and gluing paper to make a picture. Hari-e has been practiced for hundreds of years in Japan but is gaining popularity all over the world. The process is very simple but beautiful as the torn edges of the paper make for soft but defined edges.

Paint a Chrysanthemum

Sumi is the Japanese word for ink. Sumi-e literally means "ink picture." The Chinese saying "the brush dances and the ink sings" is a perfect description of the art of Sumi-e. A sumi-e painting captures the spirit or the essence of the subject such as flowers, birds or landscapes. Sumi-e is a very spontaneous art form and it is beautiful in it's simplicity. Here, you will learn how to paint a Chrysanthemum using basic sumi-e painting techniques.

Silk Painting Made Easy

Silk Painting has never been easier with FabricMate markers. With some simple techniques and a selection of coordinating colors you can create a beautiful addition to any home decor! To get started on this fun and easy project you just need to assemble your materials on a work table and cover the area with newspaper or plain newsprint. The fabric markers work very well on silk and there is no need to set the color after it has dried. Using salt is not necessary but it creates a nice mottled texture.
