Mizuhiki Butterfly
Make a hair pin, brooch or top a gift with this sweet little flying creature.

You will need:

  • 1 strand each purple silk, black and iridescent
  • Mizuhiki cords.
  • 25 gauge wire
  • 2 gold beads
  • hair clip or pin back
  • craft cement
  • flat bottom jewel (optional)

Instructions for the body
1. Take a piece of green cord and cut off ten inches. Fold in half.
2. Make a black two inch finishing knot (see below) in the middle of the folded piece. To make the body thicker, place another cord under finishing knot before you start wrapping the knot.
3. Trim one end 1” from the knot and the other end 1 1/2” from the knot.

Variation:
To make a dragonfly body, simply make the finishing knot a little longer and attach the wings a little
closer to the top.
Instructions for the wings
1. Make several figure eight loops out of the iridescent cord for the wings.
2. Pinch the loops in the middle and wrap thin wire tightly at the center to hold the wings together. Move the extra wire away from the center.
Assembling the butterfly
1. Lay the wings on top of the body and wrap with wire to hold them together. Move the wing parts around to desired shape and secure with more wire.
2. Glue a flat bottomed jewel on top of the wings and body (optional). Glue the body on to a hair clip or pin back with strong craft cement. Trim excess wire.
Finishing knot instructions
1. Loop the cord end and center over the area you want to finish or cover up.
2. Tightly wrap the cord around and towards the loop and thread the end through the loop at the top when you have reached the desired length.
3. Pull end A from the bottom until tight. Trim excess cord with small scissors.
4. Pull the end to make the loop disappear and secure the knot.
5. Trim excess cord ends to finish and apply a spot of glue on the raw edges.
