In Japan, this knot is known as the "Daki Awabi
Musubi" meaning double clamshell knot. It is also known as the "Double
Carrick" knot and is ornamental as well as functional.
Instructions:
As
with any Mizuhiki project, first pull cords through
fingers to break down the starch.
Start with one 18"
cord and make loop as shown in first drawing (figure A and B).
Take a contrasting cord (figure C and D) and lay it underneath
first loop and follow diagram as shown. Add more cords to create
thickness of the final knot. Smooth and flatten knot after addition
of all the cords.

Tape the ends together
a little farther out than you plan to trim the piece making
sure the cords are laying flat and even.
Turn the knot over and apply white glue evenly
over the back side of the knot. Let dry thoroughly then trim
off ends with scissors. Remove the tape.
Now you can attach a pin back
or barrette or glue to the front of a greeting card. Try different
color combinations with beautiful results. Mizuhiki comes in
dozens of stunning colors so interesting combinations are endless!
